Severe gales reaching velocities of up to 155km/h (96mph) have left nearly 90,000 homes without power and compelled agencies to cancel in excess of 100 air travel services, as reported by domestic outlets.
These gusts are affecting the entire southern region and southern sections of the North Island, according to the country's meteorological service.
New Zealand authorities have released rare severe gust advisories - the top caution category - in central regions including Canterbury and Wellington.
Locals have been urged to stay indoors, avoid travel, and prepare for further utility disruptions.
Extensive Damage and Emergency Measures
The electricity loss is primarily influencing homes mainly in the southern region, while authorities say that the electricity supply was being restored progressively.
Local media have stated that in some places structures have suffered roof damage, whereas utility poles and vegetation have been toppled by the gales.
In Wellington, a person was fatally injured after being struck by a wooden fragment at a well-known hiking path on Tuesday.
Also in the capital, a woman was pushed toward oncoming traffic on a road by a powerful blast, in a event that was filmed in a viral dashcam video.
Flights to and from the metropolis have been cancelled because of the gusts, and various routes and public facilities are also closed.
Simultaneously Canterbury officials have announced a state of emergency, to facilitate recovery activities.
Strike Action During Severe Weather
These intense gusts on Thursday occur while tens of thousands of school staff, physicians and civil servants are engaged in what has been called a "mega strike", demanding better pay and working conditions.
However the severe conditions has pressured them to alter certain arrangements, with some outdoor rallies shifted to interior venues or cancelled.
Like conditions are also sweeping the nearby nation, causing a heatwave to the country's outback.
Agencies have issued flame prohibitions for fear of forest fires.
