The artist has handed over the entirety of his £25,000 Mercury Prize prize money to the trust for venues, which functions to protect the UK's small live music spots.

Fender was given the prize on mid-October as his third album his work was named the top album of the past year.

Fender has chosen to hand the money over to the MVT, in appreciation of the crucial part grassroots venues had in his early career.

"I personally couldn't be pursuing my current career if it weren't for all the gigs I performed around the North East, and beyond, when I was starting out," stated Fender. "These venues are iconic, but they are struggling."

Beginning in 2023, more than 150 of these venues have permanently closed – approximately one-sixth of the entire UK sector.

Over the past year, top acts including Pulp, Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all supported the MVT in its initiatives to help venues survive, by applying a modest fee to their ticket prices, which goes to help smaller concert halls.

Fender also joined in, collecting over £100k on his 2024 arena tour to assist numerous grassroots venues across Britain.

The money helped venues that were confronting possible closure due to difficulties stemming from flooding, fire incidents and personal losses, as well as regulatory hurdles, conflicts and noise complaints.

Some locations received funding support in upgrading amenities and sound and lighting systems that helped musicians and concertgoers.

"The concept that money from concerts in major spaces supports the independent spots, where it kicks off for performers like me, is just logical," the star has stated.

They are among the artists who contributed their honor winnings to good causes

He is not the first artist to contribute his honor prize money to good deeds.

Back when they received the trophy in the mid-90s for their album Different Class, frontman the singer announced that the act would contribute their prize money to the charity War Child.

That year, artist Ms Dynamite divided her prize across multiple good causes, such as the children's charity and a charity for Sickle Cell.

"I also gave a grand to Highgate Newtown, to their gymnastics program, because I practiced gymnastics when I was growing up and they required new equipment," she shared with outlets.

Previously, Ezra Collective contributed their funds to the youth organization that supported their group, as well as other independent music bodies.

And 1994 winners they donated their prize to a MS organization after a acquaintance was diagnosed the illness.

"Receiving the award was ample," stated singer Small. "The cash was the cherry on top but we didn't require the cherry, because we had the honor. So our victory affected somebody else's life."

Recently, the Music Venues Trust shared it had saved several grassroots venues in that region, by bringing them into community ownership.

The Joiners in that area and the other in that location were bought under the community ownership initiative, which is backed by a national body and music fans who purchase "ownership units" in the venues.
