Trump's Progressive Alarm Misses Europe's Real Danger: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's security policy document offers a misguided view of the European Union. It claims that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "progressive" agendas represent an existential threat to the continent's identity. However, this perspective is based on a fundamental misreading of the situation. The actual challenge facing the EU is not societal but economic and technological lag.

A Glaring Economic Gap Separating Europe and the US

The data paint a sobering contrast. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by 87%, while a paltry thirteen and a half percent growth for the European Union. Over this time, EU GDP per capita fell from over three-quarters to just 50% of the US level. Remarkably, even Mississippi now boasts a higher per capita income than several leading EU nations like France and Italy.

Currently, about half of the world’s top fifty technology firms are American, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Technological Deficit: A Critical Problem

The growing disparity stems from stronger productivity growth in the United States, largely due to technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The scene of global tech leadership is overwhelmingly US-centric. Over the past five decades, 241 US firms have scaled into companies valued at over ten billion dollars, compared with just 14 in Europe.

This disparity raises a vital question: In the race for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, where does the EU positioned? Most analysts concede it is largely a two-horse race involving the US and China, with European nations starting at a clear disadvantage.

Root Causes of Europe's Innovation Gap

Several major factors account for this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a much more robust and agile system for financing new ventures. The EU still lacks a true capital markets union, which limits the scale of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided rules hamper European business. A US startup can launch a service under one set of laws to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a larger population size, is split among 27 different national systems, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on risk-taking differ sharply. In parts of Europe, business failure was once viewed with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has weakened its ability in pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these hurdles, one can find causes for optimism. European leaders are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have begun to propose serious reform. Key reports on EU competitiveness and the internal market point to the need for sweeping changes.

With the right policies and regulatory reforms, these assets could support much higher degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe still possesses significant advantages: skilled human capital, excellent schools and universities, and world-class research institutions. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these elements have the potential to trigger a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if the EU does not become the leader in creating next-generation technologies, it can still dramatically increase economic output by implementing and tailoring innovations from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now stands at a critical moment. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, Europe's slide in innovation has been gradual. But, if it fails to take decisive action to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could turn into a rapid and permanent loss of world influence.
